								Prostate is not
								only a
								gland.

It is a muscular structure surrounding the
portion of the urethra between the bladder neck
								and the sphincter (A)

in which glands are more or less developed
								depending on the person.

Hypertrophy of some glands may lead to the formation of a
benign tumor

or malignant obstruction,
which compresses the posterior urethra and the prostate

muscle. The
bladder responds to clear this hurdle by myocardial hypertrophy first. The

bladder capacity is then reduced,
causing frequent urination.

With time, the bladder muscle weakens. The
large flaccid bladder is unable to
empty.

								The
								evolution from a
hypertrophic bladder to a flat bladder is faster
or slower, depending on the obstacle. A
significant narrowing of the prostate urethra
can quickly generate a large atonic bladder,
even in the newborn, who presents considerable fibrosis
								of the prostate. In
contrast, fibrosis of the prostate muscle, if it
is not too important, may produce a low
resistance and an obstacle for urination. If
this resistance is low, it will take several
years to change a hypertonic bladder to
								hypotonic one.

The cause of benign prostatic hyperplasia is
generally related to hormonal imbalance. The
secretion of sex hormones is disrupted. The
								abnormalities affect testosterone,
								dihydrotestosterone, estradiol,  pituitary
hormones, and local growth factors. The
								hormonal monitoring
and the appropriate hormonal treatment help
the more often to stabilize or to reduce the adenoma avoiding surgery.
